The current entity known as the Sgt. Anthony
Park Association is a non-profit neighborhood
association formed in 1994 by a group of residents
interested in the safety, beauty, and stability of the
area around Sgt. Anthony Park at
90 Palisade Ave.
The initiating circumstances
were the city's proposed renovation plan for the Park,
which at that time was a hard-scrabble lot with few
amenities.
The imminent expansion of the
parking facilities for
Christ
Hospital
was also feared by some residents as part of a trend to
diminish the residential character of the neighborhood.
The first meeting was held in the home of Robin
Petrick at
85 Palisade Ave., directly across from the
Park.
A constitution was eventually
drawn up, modeled after that of the Riverview
Neighborhood Association, a group just to the north of
Sgt. Anthony.
The residents contributed
suggestions toward the renovation of the Park, which
opened in its renewed form in 1995.
Plans for the erection of a
600-car garage for
Christ
Hospital
were eventually defeated by the opposition of the
neighborhood.
Boundaries of the Association as set in its
constitution are:
North: Waverly St, South:
State Highway, East:
Hoboken Ave., West:
Baldwin Ave.
